Monday, 11/28/11

Hey everyone! We hope you had a blessed weekend with family, friends, and rest.

Reminders:
  • We have a field trip and an outing this week- we will be headed to pick out a tree for the classroom on Thursday in the morning, but we will be back by lunchtime. FRIDAY, we will be going to the Festival of Trees! We will be gone most of the day, so PACK A SACK LUNCH. If you're interested in joining us/driving, please let us know by email or calling the school.
  • Missing work slips go home on Mondays and need to be signed by Wednesday with all of the work turned in. Students have several opportunities during the week to see if they have missing work even before the slips go home, so beginning Wednesdays, they will have lunch detention if they are still missing work.
  • Book Orders went home today, and they are PACKED! Please consider ordering Christmas presents through them- the deals are spectacular and they help contribute to our classroom library! They are due Friday, Dec 2nd.

  • Next week is a short week, but we are still planning on instruction, so please let us know if you're planning on being out of town at any time- we want to make sure work gets sent home, and when everyone requests it at once, we get a little bit backed up. Thanks!

Hey all- hope you had a wonderful long weekend!

A few notes:
  • Those of you who didn't have conferences will be getting report cards sent home TODAY.
  • Our Afternoon in the Aristocracy feast is on THURSDAY. Please bring the item you were asked to bring so that we can cook our colonial dishes on Thursday. If possible, I would like these items by tomorrow so we can do inventory and figure out what we still need. As it is, we will not be having a feast, because only one item has been brought in.
  • For Thursday, students are encouraged to dress up as those in the aristocracy would- they will have time to get dressed after food prep, but before the feast. If you have any special requests or concerns, please let us know!
  • THANKSGIVING CHAPEL is this WEDNESDAY! Everyone is middle school will have a minor speaking role, and we are participating with the entire school in this event. Please join us at 8:45 am on Wednesday to see what all of the classes present!

My apologies for not blogging yesterday- I didn't realize I hadn't posted until much later.

***Next week we will be having a class luncheon called An Afternoon in the Aristocracy. We will be making traditional colonial food and learning English etiquette. There will be tie-ins with Math and English, but the focus will be learning about how the colonies tried to simulate English Aristocracy with less supplies than they had before they came to the Americas. YOUR STUDENT is being asked to bring one supply- amounts will be specified- so that we can make these recipes. Please bring them by next Monday so we can gather the supplies we have left over and get them organized. If you cannot purchase these items or choose not to participate, let us know so we can get the supplies! THANK YOU!***

Recruitment Posters:
Students have chosen one of the original 13 colonies. Their job is to make a recruitment poster, or advertisement, to entice Englishmen and women to leave everything and help populate THEIR colony. The posters need to be:
  • Appealing and clean from a distance. Fine print is fine, but there needs to be a clear title/slogan.
  • Identifiable as THEIR colony. It needs to say their colony name clearly and accurately represent the virtues of their colony.
  • strategic. How are they recruiting people? With guilt? Pride? Adventure? Opportunities?
These will be due TUESDAY. Students will be graded on cleanliness, truthfulness, and overall appeal for their colony. Posters are half of a posterboard (they are precut and in the classroom).

Hey there!

Quick reminders-

* Chapel is tomorrow morning at 8:45! Middle school will be discussing fruits of the Spirit and we would love to see you there!

* The Compassion Clinic is October 8th at Tigard High School- we desperately need more volunteers! Please consider helping serve those in our community through this event. For more info, please visit compassiontigard.com or shoot me an email. I would love to get more Gaarde students participating. Also, it counts towards community service, so if you know any high schoolers that need CS hours for a class, this is a great way! All team leaders are prepared to sign off for their participation. Additionally, if you know families that would benefit from receiving care at this event, PLEASE let them know! I have extra flyers if you need them!

*Walk-a-thon is Friday- please make sure you turn in pledge sheets and get your kids excited about it! It's a great event for the school in so many ways.

Thursday, 9/22/11

Hey everyone!

A couple of notes:

Walk-a-thon information went home today. The walk-a-thon is next Friday, September 30th. We are so excited for your kids to be a part of this fundraiser, and look forward to seeing how much we can earn for our school!

Middle School Chapel is next Wednesday, September 28th. Three times a year, it will be middle school's turn to perform for the school and lead their fellow students in a fun illustration of biblical concepts. This time, we are talking about the fruits of the spirit, and everyone has been assigned to a fruit of the spirit to illustrate Galations 5: 22-23. If you would like to attend, chapel begins at 8:45. We hope to see you there!

I told students yesterday about an event I (Mrs. Johnson) am participating in called the Compassion Clinic. It's an event on Saturday, October 8th that's one day of free health care (and other services) for the under-insured and impoverished in the area. I sent home flyers, but you can find more information, including volunteer signups, at www.compassiontigard.com . I will be in the children's area (we provide free childcare for those at the clinic), and we would love participation from youth in the area. If you would like to serve alongside your kids, the Children's area is a great place to do that! If you know of any dentists, doctors, or other healthcare professionals, this is a huge need- the more doctors we can get to volunteer our time, the more people we can show Christ to through this service! We also need barbers/ haircutting professionals- in the Social Services fair, we provide free haircuts for those waiting for their appointments, and the more, the merrier! Lunch is served, and volunteers are asked to arrive at 7:30 am. The clinic shuts down around 3pm. Thanks SO MUCH for your consideration in this!
